Whiskey and Wine
-Why in the world does it seem to come up with almost every single person, including Jack, in the book, that the solution to their stress or uncertainty comes to be whiskey or wine (or many other alcoholic beverages)? Is there any other way to solve or moan over a problem? I know it's all part of the 'great' adventure, but really...

Apparently drinking is a way for many to relieve some stress and pain. It gives people a place to runaway to, also to numb the pain. This addiction can get out of hand for many, if they are not careful.
Across American cultures, as well as almost if not every culture over the distances and ages has seen alcohol as a stress release. In the short term it numbs the nerves. However, it is a powerful depressant that I have seen reduce one of the goofiest people alive into a sobbing wreck in a mere hour. And even if you are lucky enough to feel the numbing as opposed to the pain, whatever the original cause of stress was to begin with might have grown worse with time. If not; one becomes dependent on that release for their happiness. The solution: more shots. Alcoholism becomes a quick reality, that many trying to wash away the war had to face. But it has always been an element in =many societal circles. (Often both the high and low class.)
" Alcohol is the best way to forget bad things at once." is what my dad always said( He's not alcoholic). I guess when people feel stressed about something that is pressuring them, One can't fall asleep. But when you drink alcohol, you can sleep, because you are released from the pressure. I don't think it is a good way to get rid of stress but it helps you mentally in a second.
Sarah...are you serious?
agree with Sarah, in eastern culture, alcohol played a very important role. and in now days as the pressure gets higher and higher, lot of the Asians spend the night in bar or karaoke (which is another kind bar).
