The Purity of the Road

pg. 234 "...all ready for the purity of the road again...the purity of moving and getting somewhere, no matter where, and as fast as possible and with as much excitement and digging of all things as possible."

I was struck by this quote, it's poetic. And further emphasizes Jack's sentiments from the beginning of the book. He's constantly searching for that clean slate running away from his depression.
I'm starting to feel that Jack was never truly happy, he never lived in the moment, though [mind you,] not many people can, but I'm starting to get frustrated with his itchy feet, and excessive internalization. Arrgghh...so thoughts?

I think that Jack, at this point in his life feels like a fish being plunged in to air trying to get a drink of water. He is feeling depressed so he is keeps going to find something different and exiting. He is trying to find feeling.

I think it's interesting that Jack refers to the road as "pure", most of his experiences while traveling seem anything but.

There are many ways to learn how to live in the moment. When one has settled down and moves through their days at a slow pace they can often find satisfaction in the present. For others this way of living is boring and forces them to only think of the future and what excitement it may hold. I think that there is a certain age where it is healthy to always be looking for the next thing and place, however Jack seems to have passed that age and may be forced to realize that he has to direct his life towards something soon.
